PALM Suites

Cardiology

This collection includes PALMs for training interpretation of clinical tests related to diagnosing cardiac abnormalities. Examples of such tests are blood pressure determination, 12-lead ECG, bedside cardiac ultrasound, and transesophageal echocardiography.

  • Blood Pressure

    Determine systolic and diastolic blood pressures from sphygmomanometer readings and auscultation

  • ECG Morphology

    Consists of two versions:

    1. ECG Morphology and Rates trains interpretation of 12 conditions that change 12-lead ECG morphology along with 3 rate classifications: bradycardia, tachycardia, and normal sinus rhythm
    2. ECG Morphology trains interpretation of 13 conditions that change 12-lead ECG morphology; 5 answer choices with one option always being “normal”

  • ECG Arrhythmias (in-progress)

    This PALM is multiple choice (5 answer choices with one of them always being "Normal") and consists of the following diagnoses:

    • Atrial Fibrillation (AFib)
    • Atrial Flutter (AFlut)
    • First-degree Atrioventricular Block (AVB1)
    • Second-degree Atrioventricular Block (AVB2) including 2:1 Block and types I (Wenckenbach) and II.
    • Third-degree Atrioventricular Block (AVB3)
    • Sinus Bradycardia
    • Sinus Tachycardia
    • Normal
  • Cardiac Ultrasound Windows

    Use videoclips to Identify six different bedside cardiac ultrasound views: Apical, Parasternal long, Parasternal short – aortic, Parasternal short – mitral, Parasternal short – papillary, Subxyphoid

  • Cardiac Ultrasound Anatomy

    Identify anatomical features in normal bedside cardiac ultrasound images

  • Transesophageal Echocardiography

    Transesophageal cardiac ultrasound for identifying normal and abnormal findings in three different ultrasound views

Dermatology

This collection trains the vocabulary for describing skin lesion morphologies, configurations and distributions as well as identification and discrimination of common dermatologic disorders. PALMs for mixed skin types as well as those specific to dark skin are included.

Histopathology

This collection trains users to distinguish among the basic pathologic processes of cell & tissue injury/repair, acute inflammation, chronic inflammation, and neoplasia as well as normal histology.

Obstetrics/Gynecology

This collection uses PALMs to train interpretation of common clinical tests and measurements made during gynecologic examinations, pregnancy and childbirth. Examples are interpretation of fetal heart rate patterns and colposcopy images.

  • Fetal Heart Rate

    Classify fetal heart rate tracings into categories I, II, or III; includes training independent recognition of category II tracings with “moderate” variability vs with absent or minimal variability

Radiology

This collection aims to train identification of normal anatomy based on CTs, plane field xrays, MRIs, and ultrasound images as well as training interpretation of pathologies present in these images.

  • Thoracic X-ray

    Identify normal PA or lateral thoracic anatomy in plain film x-ray images

    1. A multiple-choice version allows the trainee to select from 5 answer choices
    2. An image-mapped (-im) version asks the trainee to click on specific anatomic structures

  • Thoracic CT (with and without contrast)

    • Identify normal thoracic anatomic structures at 8 levels of axial CT images with contrast
      1. A multiple-choice version allows the trainee to select from 4 answer choices
      2. An image-mapped (-im) version asks the trainee to click on specific anatomic structures
    • Identify normal thoracic anatomic structures at 6 levels of axial CT images without contrast
      1. A multiple-choice version allows the trainee to select from 4 answer choices
      2. An image-mapped (-im) version asks the trainee to click on specific anatomic structures

  • CT Pulmonary Angiography (in-progress)

    Locate pulmonary emboli using CT pulmonary angiography

Ultrasound

This collection focuses on training identification of ultrasound views (planes) and normal anatomical structures along with discriminating pathologies present in ultrasound images and video clips.
